E-waste recycling centre in Kenya

Computers and mobile phones unfortunately don't have eternal life. What to do with them when they are no longer usable? Electronic devises that are no longer useful are become electronic waste (e-waste), and can be useful and dangerous at the same time. Useful, as often the spare parts can be re-used. Dangerous, as when they are tossed away toxins can pollute the environment, for example the drinking water.

Computers FOR Development stands for responsible recycling, limiting e-waste to ensure that the obsolete hardware is disposed of in environmentally friendly manner.

Waste management plant in Kenya
In 2007, FOR started to develop an e-waste management program in Kenya to handle obsolete computers in the future. FOR has developed an implementation plan with CFSK to set up a waste management plant with the support of the Kenyan Ministry of Education. WASTE (Netherlands) and Microsoft have been identified as implementation partners. In 2009, FOR intends to implement activities around setting up e-waste management plans and plant where applicable.
